The Insider’s Guide to Rolex Daytona’s Most Iconic Models

ROLEX DAYTONA

Since its founding in 1905, Rolex has established itself as one of the most prestigious names in luxury watchmaking. Among its many legendary timepieces, none is more iconic than the Daytona.

Introduced in 1963 and designed with professional motor racers in mind, the Daytona was named after the renowned Daytona International Speedway in Daytona Beach, Florida. The now-signature “Daytona” inscription began appearing on the dial around 1965.

Featuring stopwatch functionality and a tachymetric scale on the bezel for measuring average speeds over a known distance, the Rolex Daytona pairs exceptional performance with a distinctive design, making it truly unparalleled among timepieces.

What makes the Daytona especially beloved among collectors and enthusiasts is Rolex’s tradition of creating dial variations that are not only visually striking but also full of charm and sophistication. The Daytona line features some of the most celebrated and recognizable dials in Rolex’s entire collection. Let’s take a closer look at some of its most distinguished designs.

The most celebrated and recognizable Daytona is undoubtedly the “Paul Newman.” In the late 1960s and 1970s, actor and race car driver Paul Newman was frequently photographed wearing a Rolex Cosmograph Daytona, reference 6239. Characterized by its Art Deco-style numerals, contrasting subdials, and a red minute track around the edge of the dial, the “Paul Newman” stands out as a true classic within Rolex’s history.

Ironically, these dials were initially slow to sell and largely overlooked. That changed dramatically once Newman was seen wearing one regularly, sparking interest and admiration among collectors. It’s no surprise the dial earned the nickname "Paul Newman" from the watch community. In 2017, his personal Daytona made headlines by selling at auction for $17.8 million, becoming the most expensive wristwatch ever sold at the time. While the dial’s design has evolved since its debut, the nickname has endured—forever linking this reference to both Paul Newman and Rolex. The latest version of the Rolex Daytona "Paul Newman" is available in two distinct styles: one with a Yellow Gold Oyster Bracelet (Ref. 126508) and another with an Oysterflex Bracelet (Ref. 126518LN).

The “John Mayer” Yellow Gold Daytona represents yet another strong link between Rolex and pop culture. Distinguished by its highly coveted green dial, this timepiece has become a standout favorite among collectors. Its popularity soared after musician John Mayer famously dubbed it a 'sleeper hit' on Hodinkee’s Talking Watches series. Mayer purchased the watch shortly after its 2016 release, and by 2019—after word of his endorsement spread—demand surged. Prices climbed rapidly, and the watch began appearing on the wrists of numerous other celebrities

Another popular and sought after Daytona is the “Panda.” The model features a white dial framed by a black ceramic bezel with contrasting black subdials, reminiscent of a Panda’s face. Alternatively, a “Reverse Panda” dial flips the color scheme, with a black dial and contrasting white subdials. Considered by many as the very best in the industry, the Panda can be very difficult to find because of its rarity and high demand.

Continuing the trend of animal-inspired nicknames, the “Pikachu” Daytona—named after the iconic Pokémon character—is a fan favorite with serious collector appeal. Featuring a Yellow Gold case and a champagne dial with contrasting black subdials, the resemblance to Pikachu is hard to miss. This model is also known as the “YML,” standing for “Yellow, Modern, Luxurious.” The Pikachu nickname fits perfectly as both the Pokemon and the Daytona are celebrated for their speed and power.

Today, Rolex Daytonas carry a steep price tag. Their popularity and demand have surged dramatically over the years, ultimately making the Daytona—at least in my opinion—Rolex’s flagship model. What’s fascinating is that when the Daytona line was first introduced, it didn’t enjoy the success it holds today. Its rise to stardom was gradual but undeniable, and ironically, its slow start helped fuel its current iconic status. Here’s why: initially, demand for the Daytona was low, prompting Rolex to limit production of the model. As interest grew, Rolex kept production limited instead of increasing it, deliberately creating a sense of scarcity. Thanks to its distinct dial variations and memorable nicknames, the Rolex Daytona has become not only Rolex’s most popular model but also one of the most sought-after watches in the entire industry.
