The Cartier Baignoire: The Art of Quiet Luxury

The story of the Cartier Baignoire began in 1912, when Louis Cartier crafted an unprecedented oval timepiece exclusively for Grand Duchess Maria Pavlovna of Russia. At a time when watches were predominantly round, this creation defied convention with its refined oval shape, opening the door to new possibilities in watchmaking.

Although the Baignoire originated in 1912, it would not make its public debut in the form we know today until 1958, when it was launched as the Ovale Cintré. The name ‘Baignoire’—French for ‘bathtub’—was eventually chosen in 1973. Some believe it was inspired by the watch’s gently curved oval case, which subtly echoes the shape of a bathtub, while others suggest it draws inspiration from the elegantly contoured VIP box seats at the Opéra Garnier, a nod to the watch’s French heritage.

Its elongated case flows naturally with the contours of the wrist, creating a harmonious timepiece that feels as though it is part of the wearer rather than merely resting upon the wrist. At the same time, its minimalist design—featuring Cartier’s classic Roman numerals and signature blue-steel sword-shaped hands—demonstrates that sometimes, less truly is more.

The Baignoire is available in two sizes: mini and small. The mini model features a case measuring 24.4mm in length, 18.7mm in width, and 7.2mm in thickness, while the small model’s case measures 31.4mm long, 23.1mm wide, and 6.9mm thick. It is offered with either a leather strap in a variety of colors or a bracelet in Rose, Yellow, or White Gold. Certain models are set with diamonds around the bezel, and some even feature diamonds along the entire bracelet.

In March 2023, Cartier relaunched the Baignoire collection at Watches & Wonders, the prestigious international watch and jewelry trade show held annually in Geneva, Switzerland. Eleven new versions of the Baignoire were introduced—five in the mini size and six in the small size. The re-release was highly anticipated by collectors and enthusiasts alike, with some models selling out or even requiring waiting lists.

In June 2023, French actress and singer Lou Doillon became the face of Cartier’s Mini Baignoire watch campaign. The campaign presents a series of elegant, minimalist images that celebrate both the artist and the watch’s timeless style. In some visuals, she wears the timepiece, while in others, she is playfully depicted as smaller than the watch itself. The campaign proved immensely popular, capturing the beauty and elegance of the Baignoire.

While the Cartier Baignoire is more accessible today, it remains one of the brand’s most exclusive and coveted models. This timepiece stands apart because few watches combine such sophistication with understated elegance. The Cartier Baignoire embodies quiet luxury rather than flashiness, designed for those who understand that the most powerful statements are often the subtlest.
