The Beginning: An Ellipse Derived from the Golden Ratio
In 1968, Patek Philippe created something unique and new when they introduced a shape. Prior to the Golden Ellipse shape, Patek Philippe was known for the round case design of their watches and the formal dress watch. The Golden Ellipse was not based on aviation, diving, racing, etc. as many watches of the same time frame were. It was mathematically derived. The case proportions were based on the same mathematical relationship (the Golden Ratio) that was also used in classic architectural designs and Renaissance artwork. The Reference 3577 was manufactured throughout the majority of the 1970's. This reference became one of the most recognizable examples of how Patek Philippe utilized this mathematical relationship to create a unique shape, available in both 18KÂ Â

CASE AND APPEARANCE
The Case of the Reference 3577 is relatively small and thin. It utilizes a brushed and polished oval shape as opposed to the round shaped watches that dominated the market at the time. All watches came standard with a Snap-On Back. Many watches included an Integrated Chain-Link Bracelet from Patek Philippe, manufactured using the same type of gold as the Case.
Overall, this watch was designed to be worn without drawing too much attention to itself. It was elegant, thin, and definitely geometric in nature.

MOVEMENT
Despite being dressed down, this movement is still serious Watchmaking. It consists of 18 Jewels, a Gyromax Balance adjusted for Heat, Cold, Isochronism, and 5 Positions, a Straight-Line Lever Escapement, and Patek Philippe's Geneva Seal Certification regarding its Finish. Because this movement is Manual-Wind rather than Automatic, it requires regular winding from its Owner. This requirement is viewed positively by many Vintage Collectors as adding to the Charm of this Model rather than restricting it.
DIAL OPTIONS
Dials for Golden Ellipse Models from this era were available in various Colors. Blue is one of the most desired Colors along with Silver, Black, and Gold-Toned Variations. Markers used in these Models were usually Slim Batons or Dagger Indices. These Markers were kept Minimalistic to complement the Case's Unobtrusive Design Style. Dials produced during this timeframe are well-known to age gracefully, developing a Soft Patina that Collectors actively seek out today.

WHY THE MODEL PERSISTS
Over 50 Years after its initial release, the Golden Ellipse remains one of the most influential Shapes in Watchmaking, although quietly so. Whereas many Design-Driven Watches released during the late 1960's lost relevance due to Changing Trends; the Ellipse's Proportions were Mathematical-Based rather than Fashion-Based, which contributes greatly to why it still appears Contemporary Today.
