What Makes the Tank Française Different

The Cartier Tank Française has the same rectangular case, roman numerals, and famous cartier hands that have been associated with the model for generations. However, the Tank Française separates itself from other Tank models. 

Cartier introduced the Tank Française in 1996 with the bracelet worked into the design of the watch. The case and the bracelet are designed in a way that makes them look like one singular piece, giving a heavier, more modern appearance than other Tanks in Cartier’s collection.

From Military Tanks to the Française

While the Tank Française came much later than the original Tank, Louis Cartier carried over the same inspiration from military tanks seen from above during World War I to this timepiece. The long sides of the watch resemble the tracks of a tank, with the dial sitting between them. Those sides would eventually come to be known as the brancards. 

Why the Integrated Bracelet Mattered

At the time of the watch’s release, round watches were everywhere and were considered the standard in watchmaking. Cartier, however, decided to go another direction and went rectangular. Also, this time the bracelet became part of the watch. Nowadays, that’s pretty common but at the time of its release, it was a big standout. The watch had more metal, meaning more weight, 

Understanding Tank Française Sizes

There are a lot of Tank Française sizes. Some are genuinely small. Others are considerably larger. And because you're dealing with a rectangular watch, looking at one measurement doesn't give you a very good idea of how the watch will wear.

This is why comparing a Tank Française measurement with the diameter of a Rolex or another round watch isn't particularly useful. They don't wear the same way.

How the Tank Française Wears

The smaller Tank Française references tend to have a very traditional Cartier appearance. They sit neatly on the wrist and don't demand much attention. On some wrists they can almost look more like a bracelet with a watch built into it. Go larger and the feel of the watch changes. You see more of the case, and the watch becomes more noticeable without suddenly looking like an oversized Tank.

The 2023 Tank Française Update

Cartier updated the collection in 2023. The difference is notable, particularly around the case and bracelet, but Cartier didn't try to make the old Tank Française disappear. Instead, the newer design is more sculpted. The way the bracelet enters the case changed, and the proportions were adjusted. It's cleaner in some areas and more modern in others. But it's still a Tank Française.

Is the Tank Française the Right Tank for You?

The Tank Française won't be the right Tank for everyone. If what you really want is the traditional Cartier look of a thin rectangular watch on a leather strap, there are other Tanks that probably make more sense. But if you like the Tank shape and want more customizability, the Française is an obvious model to look at.
